Gaeltacht na nDéise, as the County Waterford Gaeltacht is known, is situated a few miles outside Dungarvan, Co Waterford and is the only remaining Gaeltacht area in the South East of Ireland. The word “Gaeltacht” means an area where Irish is spoken as a community language and within the home. It is an area of outstanding natural coastal beauty, being surrounding by sea on three sides.

The Gaeltacht is made up of two areas, An Rinn and Sean Phobal and has a strong tradition in the Irish language, heritage and culture. It is an area that is also steeped in history. On this site you can find recordings of local singers and musicians, both young and old. Take the time to have a listen!

There are generations of families involved in fishing the seas and farming the land. There is also a strong tradition of education in the area, since the founding of Coláiste na Rinne in 1905 and Meánscoil San Nioclás Irish language secondary school in 1959.

Other business in the area include Nemeton TV Company; Oyster Fisheries; local artisanes making bespoke furniture and kitchens; Artists involved in all art media; Criostal na Rinne where beautuful crystal pieces are designed and created, and Joan Clancy’s Art Gallery in An Rinn where every exhibition is worth a 2nd (or 3rd) visit.

Comhlucht Forbartha na nDéise Teoranta

This site is provided by the Development Manager of Comhlucht Forbartha na nDéise Teoranta, which is the development company devoted to improving the language, community, social, cultural and economic development of this small, unique Gaeltacht area. Comhlucht Forbartha na nDéise is a community based, not for profit organisation with charitable status. There are seven board members, all of whom are from the local area, and provide their time and expertise on a voluntary basis.

Activities and Services

A Development Manager is employed to support the development of the Gaeltacht.   Some of the activities and services provided by Comhlucht Forbartha na nDéise include:

• Ionad Só na nDéise – Drop-In Centre for Teenagers

• Comhar Spóirt na nDéise – Developing an All Weather Pitch in Sean Phobal

Where Are We?

Location: An Rinn and An Sean Phobal is located about 5 miles south west of Dungarvan town in county Waterford.

How to get there: If you are travelling from Dungarvan, journey about 2 miles out of the town in the direction of Cork on the N25. Turn left on to the R674 when you see the signs for An Rinn and An Sean Phobal.

If you are travelling from Cork on the N25, journey about 5 miles from Youghal in the direction of Rosslare. Turn left at Fleming’s pub in Grange when you see the signs for An Rinn and An Sean Phobal

Pay us a visit!

Drop in to the Linn Bhuí Café in An Rinn for a wonderful breakfast or lunch. Try out your “cupla focal” (few words of Irish) when buying the paper from Paidí in the Spar shop, or a few stamps from Máire in the An Rinn Post Office.

Tigh Mhuirithe in Heilbhic; Mooneys or Tigh an Ceoil in An Rinn; John Pauls in Sean Phobal; The Marine bar and the Seanachaí, both visible from and just off the N25, which is the main Waterford to Cork road.
